A 25-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous out of fear, reported that ICE agents knocked on her door Thursday morning, claiming they were searching for children living in the U.S. without legal status. “When I came outside, I saw two men. They told me they were looking for children… I’m very scared,” she said.
Deputy Speaker of the New York State Assembly Phil Ramos stated that the agents had targeted the wrong home. The woman explained that she and her family, who live in Brentwood, are in the country legally under temporary protected status. “I spoke with the family today. Naturally, they are traumatized, but they are here legally. It is a Haitian family with protected status, and they have followed all legal processes,” said Ramos.
Ramos added that his office has been inundated with calls from concerned residents since President Donald Trump announced stricter measures on illegal immigration and birthright citizenship. A local pastor, Thomas L. Wilson, who lives near the site of the incident, also questioned the ICE agents. He claimed they had a white piece of paper and told him they were conducting a “random check,” which he dismissed as false, asserting they were there to target immigrants.
Suffolk County officials clarified that neither the Suffolk County Police Department nor the sheriff’s office were involved in the operation. News 12 reached out to ICE for a comment but has not received a response.
To address the incident, Assemblyman Ramos and community leaders will host a virtual “Know Your Rights” forum on Ramos’ Facebook page Saturday at 10 a.m., including a Q&A session for residents.
