CHINA PRACTICES ASSAULT ON TAIWAN

China recently escalated tensions with Taiwan by conducting a large-scale military drill called “Joint Sword 2024-B.” The operation included air and naval forces, such as fighter jets, bombers, and China’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning. These forces simulated a blockade and assault around Taiwan. This display of military might followed Taiwan’s National Day, sending a clear message to the island nation.

The exercise took place under the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theater Command, and one of its main objectives was to showcase China’s growing military capabilities in joint operations. The drills included record airspace incursions, alarming Taiwanese defense officials, who described them as provocative and destabilizing.

Taiwan’s military closely monitored the situation, deploying aircraft and vessels to ensure that China’s actions did not lead to an escalation. Despite these heightened tensions, Taiwan continues to assert its autonomy, calling for peace and international support. China, however, sees the drills as necessary to maintain pressure on what it views as a breakaway province.

China’s military activity reflects the broader context of strained relations between Beijing and Taipei, with China increasingly emphasizing the possibility of reunification by force. The international community, particularly the U.S. and its allies, continue to monitor these developments as they express concern over the stability of the Taiwan Strait.

COMMENTARY:

While it’s crucial to defend Taiwan’s sovereignty, we must also be cautious not to escalate tensions to the point of war. Any response to China’s increasing military pressure should focus on deterrence without provocation. Balancing military support with diplomatic engagement is essential. Encouraging dialogue between China and Taiwan, along with broader international efforts to foster peace, can help prevent a miscalculation that could lead to conflict. We must aim for a strategy that protects Taiwan’s autonomy while promoting regional stability and avoiding unnecessary confrontation.

This requires clear communication with all parties, demonstrating a commitment to Taiwan’s defense without antagonizing China into aggressive retaliation. Thoughtful sanctions and trade penalties, when combined with military preparedness, should be calibrated carefully to influence Beijing’s actions without triggering conflict. A fine balance is needed—one that upholds democratic values and international law without compromising peace.
