Born on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi, James Earl Jones was raised by his grandparents in Michigan after his father, actor Robert Earl Jones, left the family before James was born. He developed a passion for drama at the University of Michigan and later honed his craft at the American Theatre Wing under the guidance of Lee Strasberg.
Mr. Jones’s remarkable career spanned multiple decades, featuring memorable performances in films such as “Dr. Strangelove,” “The Great White Hope,” “Conan the Barbarian,” and “Coming to America.” He also starred in numerous Broadway productions, including “The Great White Hope,” “Paul Robeson,” “Othello,” and “Fences,” earning two Tony Awards for his outstanding work.
