Meta who’s the parent company of Facebook has been fined by regulators in Ireland because they stored the passwords of people for Facebook in plaintext format. This means that the passwords can be seen as they are where you can see the whole password if someone were to break into Facebook systems. They had done this after they investigated Facebook for 4 years and found they had not secured people passwords through cryptography means, where if they were to be compromised the passwords would be encrypted. It was found that doing the storage of not encrypting the passwords had violated provisions that were key in EU’s (European Union) GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations). The people that investigated Facebook were the DPC (Data Protection Commission) in Ireland.
This shows how Facebook has in the past failed to make sure that yours and my data was safe. Luckily they did eventually changed their practices, but still they failed in several areas shown in the article. I feel all passwords and personal information should be encrypted as well, not just the passwords.
