Gideon: An Old Testament Hero The Old Testament hero that I would have to relate myself to would be Gideon. There would be a positive side to why I would choose Gideon as my Old Testament hero. First what would be written would how I identify with Gideon. I would highlight what the similarities between Gideon’s life, circumstances, and relationship with God is and what mine is. Then I will discuss how Gideon’s examples would help to enhance my faith and relationship with God.
Like Gideon, I can identify with him. Gideon was questioning God and asking a lot of “ifs,” which showed him being scared or fearful in trying to take on heavy tasks (Hindson, 2003). This is very similar to how I was when I first decided to take college courses to become a minister. I had felt the calling and fearful at first because I did not know if it was really what God wanted me to do. I tried to ignore what was telling me to take these courses. My life is not what it should be. I was divorced by my wife and had to move in with some friends and start off fresh. I then had problems with my friends taking advantage of me. I was not living a Godly life at the time. Then I left those people and moved in with my sister and then felt something telling me it was time to get back to school and minister to others for God. I would make excuses and ask God, “If you really want me to do this, please give me some sort of sign?” I would keep on doing this until God would not take “no” for an answer. Just like what was talked about God telling Gideon not to give up, so as I was not to give up to the enemy and I was to “Resist the Devil,” (Hindson, 2003).
After going through the struggles of the divorce and the temptation of sin, I was fearful too. I was hanging out with other that would turn away from God and commit sin. God felt that I need to overcome any fears I had and listen to God. God has shown me through the Holy Spirit to minister to others that are in fear and living in sin. Since going through classes and learning more about God and faith, the Holy Spirit has shown me that I need to keep on going and resist the devil with all I have. This is so that the devil will eventually flee away from me. I need to minister unto others once I have an understanding of having the knowledge to go through my studies. This is what God has planned for me and how I need to stay on the path to righteousness. God want to keep a strong relationship with me.

Why a Jewish scholar would say the Gospel of John is the most Jewish of all the four Gospels will be discussed. How this is so and what is in the Gospel of John that would cause the Jewish scholar, Israel Abrahams, to say this will be discussed. The other question that will be addressed is, if this is true about the Gospel of John, why would Christians tell new people converting to start by reading the Gospel of John?
One example of why Israel Abrahams would say the Gospel of John is the most Jewish is that in John, John the Baptist baptizes Jesus as a rite of purification. Another is when Jesus turns the water into wine, where the water is shown as a purification symbol. The Baptism of Jesus and others are found in John 1:24-35 (“John 1:24-35 new,” 2011). There is another reference to the Old Testament Jewish customs. Jesus is being compared to a Lamb being sacrificed for the world’s sins. Using a lamb as a sacrifice to God for having your sins forgiven in the Old Testament is referenced in Leviticus 4:35 (“Leviticus 4:35 new,” 2011). Another proof of the Gospel of John being more Jewish than other Gospels is the fact that John is the only Gospel that uses “I am.” This is to show the significance of how Jesus was revealing Himself like Jehovah (another name for God) did in the Old Testament as mentioned not only in Scripture, but discussed in the book on the Gospel of John that Dr. Towns wrote in that book his commentary about (Towns, 2002).
Since it is true that the Gospel of John is the most Jewish Gospel of the rest of the Gospels, Christians would tell new converts to start reading the Gospel of John for several reasons. One reason is that mentioned in John and mentioned in the book on the study of John by Leon Morris, Mr. Morris mentions how John discusses Jesus Christ as being the light in the world to bring the world out of the darkness of sin. Mr. Morris not only states this, but he also says that Jesus Christ came to bring judgment to the world. To mention the whole world in the book that is discussed in the book of John and what Mr. Morris said is that this Gospel is talking about the whole world (Morris, 1989). One last thing why we should have new converts read the Gospel of John is that it discusses the love that is mentioned in an article by Allison Trites in which she discusses how this being a great Gospel to witness from. Allison puts a simple picture of the Gospel of John and I quote she calls it, “the Gospel of Love.” She also shows the struggle between the connection of the Old Testament prophecy and the fulfillment in the New Testament (Trites, n.d.).

I AM the Way the Truth and the Life |

I am the Way the Truth and the Life |
There are seven “I Am” statements that Jesus Christ used in the Gospel of John. The statement that will be discussed will be when Jesus Christ said, “I Am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”[1] What will be discussed about the “I Am” statement are the events that surround the statement. A couple of other discussion points that will be discussed will be how the statement relates to God as revealed in the Old Testament and how the statement reveals the deity of Christ.
Event Surrounding Statement
The event surrounding the statement of, “I Am the way, the truth, and the life” are that when Thomas (one of the disciples) was asking Jesus about where was Jesus going and how that Thomas can know the way to go where Jesus was going. Thomas liked to ask a lot of questions and he was known as “the doubter” from the rest of Jesus’s disciples. Thomas wanted to know the way to get to God the Father in order to get to Heaven and have eternal life. So, Jesus told that that He is the only way that anyone can come to the Father and go to Heaven. Before telling His disciples that He was the way, the truth, and the life; Jesus was asked by Thomas about where Jesus was going. This was because the still did not have faith in whom Jesus was. Jesus told the disciples before this that He was going to be going home to His Father. To me the disciples did still not know that Jesus was the Son of God. This was one of the problems with Thomas because he doubted most of who Jesus was and would question pretty much everything. If Jesus first told the disciples these things, you would think that they would have knew what Jesus Christ was telling them. When Jesus discusses about where He is going there are many dwelling places, the disciples should have known that He was discussing about going to Heaven. And in order for them to go there they would have to come through Jesus Christ by believing in who Jesus Christ was and putting their trust in Him.[2]
Relating to God from Old Testament
How the statement of “I Am the way, the truth, and the life” relates to God as revealed in the Old Testament is that God was the way, the truth, and the life in the Old Testament in order for people to get to Heaven. The use of Jesus Christ using “I Am” in the New Testament statements also shows that He is relating Himself to God. The way God would speak to prophets and others in the Old Testament was to use the first to words of the statement to show the Israelites who was speaking to them by using “I Am.” Jesus did the same thing when speaking to the disciples in the New Testament in order to relate to God from the Old Testament sayings. For instance, when God would say, “I Am the God of Abraham,” this was to show the Israelites who was speaking. This was sentence was used by God in Exodus 3:6 in the Old Testament.[3] This also proves in the deity of who Jesus Christ is and relates to knowing He is God in the flesh. This will be further discussed in the next paragraph further.
The Deity of Jesus Christ
The deity of Jesus Christ is also revealed in the statement of, “I Am the way, the truth, and the life.” The way that this statement is showing the deity of Jesus Christ is that He uses the words “I AM” in each of His statements of “I AM.” Jesus Christ shows us the deity of Him with the words “I AM” because that is how God revealed Himself to Moses in the burning bush. When Moses had asked who he was speaking to in the burning bush, God responded with the words, “I AM.” As we see throughout the Book of John, he shows Jesus Christ’s deity throughout the entire book with each of the seven “I AM” statements. Throughout all of the Gospels “I AM” gets used 23 times total. By showing that the words of “I AM” gets used throughout all of the other Gospels shows that the other disciples eventually knew that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh. Another way that Jesus Christ shows His deity to His disciples in this statement is when He says He is, “The way, the truth, and the life.” If we break this up and we see that Jesus says He is the way, we can see that Jesus is the one and only way to get to God. By Jesus showing Him being “the way,” we also see that there is no other that can get us to seeing God. By seeing Jesus Christ we are seeing the physical manifestation of God because God is Spirit. By Jesus Christ telling us He is “the truth,” we see that since God cannot ever lie, Jesus cannot ever lie as well. This speaks that just like God speaking truth we also see that Jesus is the physical manifestation of God saying what He says is in truth. Just like God is all perfect in what He does and says, so does Jesus fulfill this physically in what He does and says. The last two words that show the deity of Jesus Christ are, “the life.” As we see by Jesus Christ using these words, He shows us that He gives life. The only person that gave us life was God. So since God gives life, we also see this being fulfilled in Jesus Christ being able to raise people back to life. He Himself being raised from the dead also shows us this. Just like God is eternal in being, so is Jesus Christ eternal. This shows us that Jesus Christ is the source of all life and this shows His deity of God being manifested in the flesh.[4]
Conclusion
One of the names that God uses for Himself in the Old Testament is Jehovah. And by using the “I AM” statements used by Jehovah in the Old Testament shows us that Jesus Christ is God.[5] We have seen the events that surrounded the statement of Jesus saying, “I Am the way, the truth, and the life.” We also have seen that shows how the statement of using “I AM” relates to God in the Old Testament. We have also seen that “I AM” reveals that Jesus was Jehovah, which was a name for God in the Old Testament. This in my view points out that Jesus Christ is not only the Son of God, but that He is God in the flesh.

Eight Sign Miracles of Jesus Christ |

Eight Sign Miracles of Jesus Christ |
There are eight sign miracles that Jesus Christ had did in order to prove His deity. These eight sign miracles will be discussed and explained how each of these miracles reveal the deity of Jesus Christ as God come from Heaven in human flesh. This will prove that Jesus Christ was here in order that those might believe in His deity as God in human flesh.
John 2:1-11 Water to Wine Miracle
The very first miracle was written in the Book of John in John 2:1-11 and happened in Cana where Jesus and His disciple had gotten invited to a wedding. At the wedding celebration Jesus Christ shows His first miracle as being God in the flesh by turning water into wine. What had led to Jesus turning water into wine was that Jesus’s mother, Mary, said that there wine had given out. Mary told Jesus this because she knew that He was from God. Jesus at first told His mother that His time to perform miracles was not right now. Maybe Jesus would not perform a miracle because at that particular time He was not supposed to perform a miracle until later on. Jesus does not do the miracle until His mother, Mary, instructs the servant at the wedding to do whatever her Son asks them to do. Jesus then tells the servants to get 6 water pots filled with water and told them to draw from the pots to fill the cups with the water that was instantly turned to wine. John shows that Jesus is God because of turning something natural, water, into another substance, which became supernatural.[1]
John 4:46-54 Healing the Son of a Nobleman
Jesus was again in the city of Cana when He was approached by a Nobleman who heard that Jesus left Judea. The Nobleman asked Jesus to come and heal his sick son before he dies. Jesus told the Nobleman to go because his son will live. The Nobleman believed what Jesus had said and left. When the Nobleman came almost home his servants met him and said that his son’s fever left the son when Jesus said that the Nobleman’s son lives. The way Jesus had healed the son from a distance proves that He is from God from this second miracle that Jesus Christ did. Just like God answers our prayers of healing, so did He with the Nobleman’s son.[2]
John 5:1-9 The Healing of the Lame Man
When Jesus Christ was in Jerusalem there was a pool called the Pool of Bethesda. This pool was thought to have been a healing pool that would heal people of their infirmities once the water had been stirred up by an angel. There happened to be a lame man by the pool that was lame for 38 years. Jesus walked to the man and asked the man if he would like to be healed. The man just states that he could not enter the water without help, but Jesus tells the man to pick his bed up and walk. Once Jesus told the man to pick his bed up and walk, the man immediately was healed. This is significant because even though God sees us when we are broken down; He comes to us in order that we may believe in Him. This proves that God has mercy on the lame and weak even when we do not ask. This proves the deity that Jesus Christ is God. This displeased the Jewish leaders, but shows that God will show mercy even on the Sabbath.[3]
John 6:5-14 The Feeding of the Multitude
Jesus Christ was at the Sea of Galilee with His disciples. There Jesus saw about 5,000 men not counting women and children. This meant that there were a lot more than 5,000 people. When Jesus was going up the mountain the people followed him and testing the disciples Jesus asked His disciple basically where bread should be bought, so that the people could eat. This is where Andrew finds a boy that has lunch how far the lunch would go to feed all of these people. This showed that Andrew had faith in Jesus Christ and knew that God would not hungry people go hungry. Jesus took the loaves and fish that the boy had and gave thanks to God the Father for the food. After giving thanks, Jesus gave His disciples all of the food that had miraculously been multiplied so much that there was a lot of food left over. This proves that Jesus Christ is God in that He has the power to multiply a little bit of food into enough to feed 5,000 men (not including many women and children) with plenty to fill everyone and still have food left.[4]
John 6:15-21 Walking on Water
Jesus Christ is so powerful that He could only be God in the flesh that He is able to walk on water. The disciples were in a boat in the Sea of Tiberius when they were hit by some bad winds. Jesus was not with them at this time, but suddenly they see Jesus walking on the water towards them. This scared the disciples because at first they did not know it was Jesus. Jesus enters the boat and that is when they are on the other side of the Sea of Tiberius already. This proves that Jesus is God because only God can have the power to walk on water and instantaneously go from one place to another. There was no technology at this time to do this. God is showing that in an instant He can help us in our time of trouble too.[5]
John 9:1-7 Healing the Blind
When Jesus and His disciples were walking they saw a blind man. His disciples inquired of Jesus and asked Him basically who had to sin to make this man blind. Jesus told His disciples that no one did, but the man was blind so that Jesus could show who Jesus was. Jesus had spit on the ground and made clay and rubbed it in the man’s eyes. Jesus then told the man to go was the clay off in the pool of Siloam. The man did what Jesus said and the man came back being able to see. This miracle that Jesus did proves that Jesus is God because He is able to heal if we obey His instructions. He tested the man with telling him to go wash it off in a particular place to see if the man would obey His words. Jesus Christ is looking for us to obey Him because without Him we are lost and this shows His deity as proof He is God. No man could heal like this unless God be inside of Him. By making clay Jesus is showing man how He made us in the dust of the earth.[6]
John 11:1-54 Raising the Dead
In this passage of Scripture we learn more about the power that Jesus has in order to prove His deity as God. Jesus gets notice that Lazarus (who was a good friend of Jesus) was sick. Jesus does not go right away to show how much faith the sisters of Lazarus and Jesus’s disciples had. Jesus waits until Lazarus dies and even waits until the 3 intense days of mourning are over. The one sister of Lazarus named Martha comes out to meet Jesus when she is kind of mad at Him by telling Him if He had been there Lazarus could have lived because she knew Jesus has the power to heal. Following Martha’s statement she says that she knows that God will still give to Jesus whatever He asks from God. Then as we read in John, Mary meets Jesus in the crowd of people mourning and lies at the feet of Jesus and says that if Jesus was there her brother would not be dead. Jesus then asks where they put Lazarus after telling them that Lazarus will rise. Jesus goes to the tomb where the stone was removed and says out loud for Lazarus to, “Come out!” Lazarus then comes out of the tomb and this shows the power that Jesus has and that He is God. No one is able to bring the dead back to life except God being in Him. Back then no man could do this because Jesus had not given the power for any man to raise the dead yet. This shows that we can have victory over death if we put our trust in Jesus Christ.[7]
John 21:1-14 A Lot of Fish Miracle
In this story we see that Jesus appears to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee after His resurrection from the dead. The disciples had gone out to fish and caught nothing. Then Jesus stood at the shore, but the disciples did not know it was Him. Jesus asked the disciples if the caught any fish and they told Him they did not. Then Jesus told them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat and they would catch fish. The disciples did this and they had caught so many fish that the net was hard to pull in. Then Jesus finally tells Peter that He is the Lord and Peter jumps into the water to meet Him. Peter and the other disciples that also jumped off the boat see that there is a fire with bread and fish, but Jesus tells them to bring the fish they caught over and eat with Him. The fact that Jesus Christ is able to bring fish to the disciples instantly shows how powerful He is and proves He is God.[8]
