A sequel to Ryan Coogler’s supernatural crime drama Sinners is reportedly moving forward at Warner Bros. Pictures.
According to the newest edition of Production Weekly, Sinners 2 is “currently in development.” At this stage, Warner Bros. has not issued any official confirmation.
The first film was acquired by Warner Bros. under Coogler’s terms and went on to perform strongly at the box office. Produced on a $90 million budget, Sinners earned $259.94 million domestically and another $79 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $340 million.
The ending of Sinners had already left the door open for a follow-up. In the post-credits sequence, audiences were transported sixty years beyond the main story. An elderly Sammie (Miles Caton) is shown performing at his Chicago blues club when he’s approached by an ageless Stack (Michael B. Jordan) and Mary (Hailee Steinfeld). Stack reveals that Smoke spared him long ago on one condition — that Sammie would live peacefully. The couple then offers Sammie immortality, which he refuses. Before their departure, Sammie plays them a final song, admitting that “despite the horrors of that night, it was the greatest day of his life.” Stack responds that it was the last time he ever saw Smoke or the sun, “and the only time he ever truly felt free.”
The official synopsis for Sinners describes the story as follows: twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown seeking a fresh start but soon discover an even darker force awaiting them. As the film warns: “You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home.”
The ensemble cast featured Michael B. Jordan as both Smoke and Stack, Hailee Steinfeld as Mary, Miles Caton as Sammie, Jack O’Connell as Remmick, Wunmi Mosaku as Annie, Jayme Lawson as Pearline, Omar Benson Miller as Cornbread, Li Jun Li as Grace Chow, Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim, Yao as Bo Chow, Lola Kirke as Joan, and Peter Dreimanis as Bert.
COMMENTARY:
When I first heard the buzz that Sinners 2 might be in development, I felt excited, but my mind also went in a slightly different direction. Instead of a straight sequel, I started thinking about how much I would welcome a prequel centered on Remmick. To me, Jack O’Connell’s Remmick was one of the most intriguing characters in the film, and we only scratched the surface of who he really was.
Jack O’Connell has been one of the best up-and-coming actors I’ve seen in recent years. He has this raw, unpredictable energy that makes him magnetic on screen, and I honestly think he could carry an entire movie on his shoulders. Giving him a prequel would not only highlight his talent, but also allow us to dive into a darker, more personal corner of the Sinners universe that the first film only hinted at.
At the same time, I’d love to see more of Stack and Mary’s story. Their presence in the post-credits scene was one of the most haunting parts of Sinners. The fact that Stack and Mary were still out there, unchanged by time, raised so many questions about what they’d been through together. Their journey clearly goes beyond what we saw on screen, and I think it deserves its own spotlight.
Stack, as played by Michael B. Jordan, had this perfect mix of strength and vulnerability. He wasn’t just Smoke’s twin — he was his own man, with his own heartbreak and his own sense of sacrifice. Pairing him with Mary, portrayed so beautifully by Hailee Steinfeld, gave the story heart and tenderness amidst all the chaos. A film that dives into how they endured and what they lost along the way could easily stand alongside the main storyline.
What makes all of this possible is the foundation Coogler laid with Sinners. People liked the film because it wasn’t just another supernatural thriller; it had depth. It was about family, loyalty, temptation, and survival, all wrapped in a story that felt both larger-than-life and painfully human. The film gave us characters we could care about, even when they were caught up in horrific or impossible circumstances.
For me personally, Sinners stuck with me because of the story and the songs. The music wasn’t just background — it carried weight. It felt like another character in the film. Sammie’s performance in that post-credits scene especially hit me hard. When he played his song and reflected on that night, it captured the whole spirit of the movie: pain, beauty, and the fleeting nature of freedom. That’s something I haven’t felt from a big-budget film in a long time.
That’s why I don’t see a Remmick prequel or a Stack-and-Mary story as unnecessary add-ons. They feel like natural extensions of a world that has so much more to give. Remmick’s past could show us how the darker forces shaped the lives of ordinary people before the twins came home. Meanwhile, Stack and Mary’s journey could blend romance, tragedy, and supernatural lore into a story that deepens our understanding of what immortality really costs.
The fact that audiences are still talking about Sinners long after its release shows how much it resonated. People debate the symbolism, the ending, and even Sammie’s final words. That’s not just the sign of a movie people watched — it’s the sign of a movie that stuck with them. And for me, it’s why I’m eager to see this universe grow in ways that honor the original.
Jack O’Connell as Remmick deserves another run in the spotlight. His character still feels unfinished, like there’s a whole hidden novel inside him waiting to be told. At the same time, Stack and Mary’s love story lingers in my mind because it’s both beautiful and tragic. Exploring both of these threads would give fans more of what made the first film special, while still pushing the universe into new territory.
In the end, I think that’s why Sinners connected with people: it combined story, music, and emotion in a way that felt fresh. If Warner Bros. is smart, they won’t just churn out sequels — they’ll give us stories that expand the heart and soul of what Coogler created. A Remmick prequel and a Stack-and-Mary film would do exactly that, and as someone who loved the original, I can’t think of a better way forward.
